If you’re someone who is new to cruises, choosing the right one can definitely feel like an overwhelming process. Below are five essential questions to ask yourself before making any reservations!

1.  Which cruise line is the best fit for our needs?

Cruise lines differ greatly. Some are perfect for a romantic getaway like Royal Caribbean and others cater to seniors or children like Carnival. It’s important to look into the amenities offered and on board entertainment. These can be crucial to enjoying yourself when traveling the open seas. Typical amenities include restaurants, bars, swimming pool and fitness center. However, some ships go above and beyond and offer live shows, spas, on board ziplines, kids clubs and much more! Don’t be afraid to shop around until you find what feels right for you.

2.  Have we read ALL the fine print?

I know, I know. It’s not the most fun part about planning a trip of any kind. But cruises are a big investment of both time and money. With this, it’s really important to understand what you are signing up for. Are there additional fees? What is expected of you in terms of a payment schedule? How early do you need to arrive? What is the refund or rescheduling policy? Which amenities are included and which cost extra? Make sure you plan ahead for extra expenses that can include alcohol, canned beverages, nicer meals, internet plans, etc. Eliminating surprises provides the basis for a smooth trip.

3.  What kind of accommodations do we need?

Again, consider YOUR needs. There are several types of rooms on a cruise ship in addition to special accommodation cabins. Typically, there are four types of staterooms: 1) cabins on lower floors with a window only, 2) interior cabins with no windows, 3) exterior cabins with windows and a small balcony and 4) suites with balconies. If you’re claustrophobic or become uneasy in enclosed spaces, an interior cabin might not be a great choice. Cruise cabins are much smaller than hotel rooms and do not come with a lot of storage space. You’ll want to know where the cabins are located on the ship as this can affect different things such as feeling the waves, high traffic areas, engine noise, etc. Typically, staterooms can accommodate 2-3 people comfortably and bunk beds can make space for a fourth. It’s not uncommon for a family of 4+ to get more than one room and split the parents from the kids. You’re welcome for the idea!

4.  What are we doing on “port days” and for dining?”

Most cruise lines offer a wide variety of dining options — fixed time in a dining area, non-fixed seating, buffets, casual and upscale options. But the rules and expectations are different for each. Some require reservations; some don’t; some have dress codes; some don’t. Make sure you nail this down early. Especially if you’re cruising with kids, the last thing you want is to be scrambling for a meal at the last minute!

Same goes with shore excursions. Although there are services on board most ships to help with last minute shore excursion plans, booking early will save you a lot of time. Find out what is required in terms of transport and physical exertion for each option. Do your research so you choose activities that are appropriate for everyone.  And, as Family Cruise Companion notes, you don’t have to limit your options to only those offered by the cruise line. Independent shore excursions may be more affordable, and also might involve smaller groups with more comfortable modes of transportation.

5.  Do we have a hygiene plan?

This one might seem strange, but it can make a HUGE difference. Cruise ships cater to thousands of people, all sharing the same space. It’s not common, but illnesses can spread quickly. Especially with little kids, make sure they are washing their hands thoroughly, not just before meals or after using the restroom, but at regular intervals throughout the day. If you’re in a situation where you don’t have easy access to warm soapy water, carry hand sanitizer with you.
